Dubbed the “Superveloce”, the new high-speed journey is expected to start operating between now and 2020.

Made possible by the opening of the new Gotthard train tunnel, the trip should take only 2 hours and 45 minutes. Since the world’s longest train tunnel was opened in December 2016, 2.3 million passengers have passed through it, says Swiss Rail.

The remaining piece of the high-speed train network puzzle is the completion of the Ceneri tunnel in the canton of Ticino. As soon as this tunnel opens Swiss Rail plans to launch the “Superveloce” service.

Currently the fastest train journey between the two cities takes 3 hours and 26 minutes. Adult holders of a half price pass pay CHF 55 for a one-way trip. According to Google Maps the alternative 285 km road journey takes around 4 hours.
